Server-side tracking in plain language

Every tracking vendor will tell you server-side is essential. Here is what it actually changes, what it does not, and the revenue level at which it starts paying for itself.

Browser-side tracking is a pixel on your page telling Meta or Google that something happened. Server-side tracking is your shop telling them directly, from a server you control. That is the whole idea. Everything else is detail. But the detail is where the money is.

1. What it fixes

Ad blockers, Safari's tracking prevention and slow connections all eat browser pixels. A server call is not blocked by any of them. In the stores we have moved to server-side, the platforms see noticeably more of the purchases that actually happened, and the algorithms optimise on fuller data. That is the real benefit: better optimisation, not prettier reports.

2. What it does not fix

It does not let you track people who said no. Consent is consent, and a server call without it is just as illegal in Denmark as a pixel. It does not repair a broken checkout, a wrong currency setting or a purchase event that fires twice. And it does not make attribution right. It makes it less wrong.

THE RULE
“Server-side does not give you more data. It gives you the data you were already entitled to.”

3. When it is worth the setup

The setup is a manageable piece of work and a small monthly cost. Below roughly DKK 2M a year in revenue the platforms rarely have enough conversions for the extra signal to change what they do. Above it, the improvement in matched conversions usually pays for the setup quickly. If you are close to the line, do the maths on your own conversion volume before anyone sells you a dashboard.

What we do instead

We set up server-side for every client above the threshold, through the consent platform they already have, and we verify it the boring way: by comparing Shopify orders to platform conversions on an ongoing basis. If the numbers drift apart, something broke, and we would rather know straight away than at the end of the quarter.
